About this work
A vast human eye with a black pupil like a solar eclipse dominates the upper half of the sheet, its iris rendered in dense radiating lines. Below, two airships glide past smokestacks pouring dark smoke, each showing a stern, mustached face in its cabin window. At street level, apartment blocks carry two giant portraits of the same scowling man, and a crushed, abandoned car sits in a muddy wasteland in front.
Executed in graphite and charcoal on warm yellow paper, the drawing uses dense cross-hatching and a narrow sepia-to-black tonal range to model the eye's fibrous texture and the buildings' grime. The looming eye, repeated portraits, and derelict surroundings combine into an oppressive, closed-in mood of constant watching and decay.
